Maths at St George’s is a key subject within the school curriculum. Our aim is to give each pupil a Maths education that will meet their needs on an individual basis as well as stimulating their curiosity, interest and enjoyment of the subject. Starting in our Nursery, pupils are introduced to concepts of numeracy and move on to a challenging and exciting syllabus which reflects the requirements of the National Curriculum, the Common Entrance syllabus and, where required, the specific requirements of scholarship exams.
"Pure mathematics is, in its way, the poetry of logical ideas."
Teaching is focused on our pupils acquiring core mathematical skills but the importance of lateral thinking and the ability to problem-solve are also taken very much into account. This addressed by regular stimulating activities both inside and outside the classroom, such as taking part in a number of Maths Challenge competitions in local schools. Pupils from the Middle and Upper School also take part in the Primary Maths Challenge and the Junior and Intermediate Maths Challenges run by Leeds University.
